The government has assured parents and education stakeholders that all necessary materials for Grade 6 have been prepared and distributed to all public schools.

The competency-based curriculum (CBC) is currently in Grade 5.

The pioneer class will join Grade 6 in April and are expected to sit their first national assessment exam in November/December 2022.

Forty per cent of the final score will come from the exam while the remaining 60 per cent will come from the classroom-based continuous assessment tests in Grades 4,5 and 6.

"We have done everything possible to midwife the 8-4-4 to CBC," Magoha said.

Magoha said the Teachers Service Commission will from April begin training 60,000 more teachers to handle the first batch of Junior High school learners - Grade 7-8.

Speaking shortly before the release of the 2021 KCPE examination results at Mitihani House, Nairobi, Magoha said 6,497 new classrooms have been completed to accommodate the pioneer junior high school learners.

He said the classrooms were constructed at a cost of Sh5.23 billion shillings, this being phase one.

He said each of the classrooms cost only Sh788,000 as opposed to the previous cost of Sh1.2 million.

"So we must start asking ourselves where has the other Sh400,000 been going to," Magoha said.

"I think ... I should be asking members of the fourth estate to make noise about this. Where have you been taking the other money?" Magoha posed.

Magoha said the few classrooms that are yet to be completed are either at walling or roofing stage.

He said the ministry will ensure the construction is completed before the completion of the ongoing KCSE exams.

"We shall embark on the phase two programme which is a balance of 3,503 classrooms. In fact this morning, I asked the president to provide money for the classless and the answer was in the affirmative."

According to Magoha, the government will achieve its goal of constructing 10,000 new CBC classrooms before the current government leaves office.

"All these successes make me very comfortable that my successor will find a good script to follow in the CBC implementation programme," Magoha said.
