The Independent Policing Oversight Authority has said that it has received the information about the viral video on social media of a shooting incident that happened along the Thika Super Highawy at Pangani area.

In a statement, IPOA chairperson Anne Makori said that a Rapid Response team has responded to the matter in accordance with the provisions of IPOA Act Section 7(a)(x), which dictates that deaths and injuries occasioned by actions of police be investigated by the authority.

“The authority took up the matter on the strength of preliminary information, including but not limited to video clips depicting a crime scene which captures hat appears to be a shooting and presence of police officers,” Anne said.

She added that upon the completion of the investigations, where a fault is found, the authority shall not hesitate to make recommendations, including but not limited to prosecution.

IPOA statement comes hours after the National Police defended its cops following the murder of the two suspected robbers .

The service said, Pangani police officers responded swiftly to the robbery with violence incident and managed to corner two suspects who were fleeing on a motorbike after a chase along Thika Super Highway.

This comes following uproar from Kenyans on social media who claimed that the suspects were shot at a close range by the police even after surrendering.

In the statement, the police said that the suspects, who had robbed a woman at gunpoint, in the Pangani area defied orders to surrender and instead, fired at police officers who promptly engaged them in self-defence.

“As a result, the two suspects were fatally injured,” NPS said.
