Gender and Public Service Cabinet Secretary Margaret Kobia has lauded the UN General Assembly for addressing the situation of widows.

Kobia said the resolution on addressing the situation of widows was a first of its kind by the Assembly.

“This resolution is an exciting milestone as it brings us one step closer to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal number five of achieving Gender Equality,” she tweeted.

CS Kobia is currently leading the Kenyan Delegation attending the 66th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW66) in New York.

“It also calls for the International Community to respond to the human rights, discrimination, and violence that widows face,” she said.

She added that the Government of Kenya will continue supporting widows through policy and other pragmatic interventions in the spirit of leaving no one behind.

The theme of CSW66 is achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change, environmental, and disaster risk reduction policies and programmes.

The CS took part in a Ministerial Round-table on achieving gender equality in climate change.

“Kenya is involving women in action on climate change including supporting initiatives in Climate Smart agriculture,” she said.

She added that Kenya has developed policies and programmes that support gender equality in climate action.

Key among them is the Climate Change Act 2016 that provides for mainstreaming inter-generational and gender equity in all aspects of climate change responses,” she said.
