The government will expand the Kamandura-Maai Mahiu road, Kenya National Highways Authority has said.
The 19km stretch which passes between Ngubi and Kinenie forests, has no diversions and is described by motorists as narrow.
"At times vehicles overlap, block movement and police cannot assist," Simon Kiragu, a motorist, said.
KeNHA engineer Ken Kamau said the project will end in Mau Summit along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.
When the construction begins vehicles will be diverted to the Nyambare-Maai Mahiu road.
Kamau said the expansion is important because many vehicles traveling to Western, Nyanza, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda DRC Congo and Central Africa use the road.
KeNHA says it will notify all road users before the road is closed so that they can be prepared in advance.
The project is a welcome development for motorist because whenever an accident occurs the heavy traffic leaves motorists stranded.
Kiambu Senator Kimani Wamatangi said the project will benefit residents.
Wamatangi said movement in some parts of Lari subcounty such as Nyambare, Gitithia, Escapement and Kijabe will be eased.
"These are some of the projects which the government is doing to improve livelihood of Kenyans. They will improve trade and farming," he said.
On Monday, Wamatangi asked locals to be patient as the government embarks on the project.
