The Masai Mara University Council has dismissed Vice Chancellor Prof Prof Kitche Magak and appointed Joseph Chacha to replace him.

Magak has been demoted to substantive professor, grade 15.

“Report to the chairperson, department of language, linguistics and culture in the school of humanities, social sciences and creative industries for assignment of duties,” a letter sent to Magak by the council reads.

It was dated January 19.

It said his allowances as acting VC have been terminated.

"The university council resolved that you relinquish the position of Acting Vice Chancellor and hand over with immediate effect," the letter reads.

It was signed by the chairman of the council, Kennedy Ole Kerei.

The letter does not specify grounds for dismissal.

Magak was appointed after former VC Mary Walingo was sent on substantive leave as she continues with the court process over charges of alleged corruption.

Magak's appointment was accompanied by an enquiry in Parliament on the rationale of his appointment.

In a response submitted to Parliament, the varsity said that he was the most suitable.

“The two DVCs have since been charged in a court of law for various corruption offences related to the 'Mara Heist' allegations,” the report reads.

The second option was to appoint a principal from a constituent colleges to replace the VC.

Since the university does not have any constituent college headed by principals, the idea was quashed.

“With this hiccup, the University Council proceeded to apply the next best option, which is to appoint a full professor to perform the functions of Vice Chancellor,” the report reads.

At this point, the university council vetted three full-time professors, Nathan Oyaro, Adu Wasike and Kitche Magak.
