The electoral agency has dismissed claims that it was not working as a team as they lay strategies to hold next year’s general election in August.

IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati urged Kenyans not to pay attention to rumours of division among stakeholders.

“There is propaganda going round that we are not working with some stakeholders. The commission collaborates with various stakeholders in the delivery of its mandate which is to deliver credible elections,” he said.

Chabukati spoke at Jumuiya Conference and Country Home in Limuru in Kiambu county when he attended a meeting with the NCCK on Wednesday.

He was accompanied by commissioners Juliana Cherera (who is also the vice chairperson), Boya Molu, Francis Wanderi, Irene Masit and Justus Nyang’aya.

National Council of Churches of Kenya secretary general Canon Chris Kinyanjui said they had invited the IEBC commissioners so that they can hold special prayers for them, as they continue preparing for next year.

“Everyone wants to witness next year’s elections. We pray that peace prevails and it is our duty as church leaders to dedicate everyone who will participate before God,” he said.

Kinyanjui asked church leaders to pray for the country’s peace, the government and its leaders so that peace can prevail in the whole process of campaigns, during and after the elections.

Chebukati said the IEBC did not want to go against the electoral law, so that court cases may not be left hunting them.

He said they have been meeting stakeholders as required by law to lay the required strategies and ensure credible elections have been achieved.

The stakeholders include the police, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the Ethic and Anti Corruption Commission, Director of Public Prosecutions, Registrar of Political Parties and the media.

The IEBC chairman also said that, they are planning to continue with voter registration in January.

“People who have not registered as voters and have not collected their identity cards, should do so because once the next year’s registration is complete, we shall not do any other registration,” he said.
