Kenya Editors’ Guild has expressed its concern following the unfortunate circumstances surrounding the death of veteran science editor Gatonye Gathura.

Gathura worked as a science editor at the Daily Nation and later as a writer at the Standard.

The police reports indicate that the journalist’s body was found on October 26, 2021, in Naivasha and has been lying at a local mortuary since then.

In a statement, Kenya Editor’s Guild President Churchill Otieno said that at this point, there is scanty information about when and how Gathura met his death.

At the same time, the Guild has also learned of the sudden death of Joshua Nanjero of the Standard Group, who was found dead in his house in Nairobi.

Nanjero was a cartoonist with The Nairobian.

The Editors’ Guild is calling on the authorities to take quick action to establish the facts around the two deaths.

It wants speedy investigation of the two cases, including conducting a post-mortem to establish the cause of death and shed light on the circumstances surrounding the deaths and has urged the Director of Public Prosecutions to order an inquest to be undertaken.

Kenya Editors’ Guild has also sent its condolences to the families and wishes them comfort and strength, and commits to remain steadfast in doing everything possible to establish the circumstances surrounding the two deaths.
