ODM secretary general Edwin Sifuna has cautioned supporters of the party and leader Raila Odinga not to give in to provocation from hustler nation leaders and supporters.

Sifuna spoke on Thursday at the Kikuyu council of elders headquarters in Ruaka, Kiambaa subcounty, during a meeting with youths drawn from Mt Kenya region.

He said Deputy President William Ruto is desperate.

"We are now dealing with an extremely desperate opponent and all this noise is that they were banking on rejection of our party leader Raila Odinga in the Mt. Kenya region. They were saying that Raila is unacceptable in Mt. Kenya. Now that Mt. Kenya region has demonstrated that they have opened their eyes, ears and heart on the message of unity. Right now they have started using tactics of opposition," said Sifuna.

Sifuna was reacting to the Kondele incident where Ruto's convoy was stoned by youths.

"Yesterday the DP entered  Kisumu and youths were given money unevenly. The youths started to fight for that money and now they are saying that it is ODM and it is Raila who threw stones at them," said Sifuna.

Sifuna said ODM is peaceful and wants fair polls.

"UDA people should leave the police to do their work, the police wrote a letter that Kondele incident was due to youths fighting over money which was dished out by the hustler nation," said Sifuna.

Ruto's office hit out the police over its handling of the Kondele violence.

In a statement on Thursday evening, the DP's communications secretary David Mugonyi accused the police of engaging in political mischief.

He said, "The statement by the National Police Service, which carelessly profiles people in regrettable terms, underscores the fact that they had intelligence on the criminal conspiracy to perpetrate lawlessness in broad daylight, and ample opportunity to stop it and facilitate a peaceful event, but consciously opted to engage in political mischief instead."

Mugonyi also denied distribution of  campaign finances was the cause of the fracas, which escalated.

"The police should not play around with people's lives or property. Just do your job," he said.

The police had said that they had received intelligence of tension in the area and informed the DP before he made the stopover.

Police spokesperson Bruno Shioso said in a statement on Wednesday that there was tension within Kondele area, owing to the alleged distribution of campaign logistical funds among local groups.
