ODM Party leader Raila Odinga has asked Kenyans to respect women.

Speaking when he met a delegation from the Lower Eastern region at Chungwa House, Nairobi County on Tuesday, Raila said women are the people who bear the burden of carrying pregnancy until its full term.

"Kazi ya wanaume ni sekunde moja tu, si unaona kuku akiwa pale.. na anamaliza haraka. Halafu kazi yote inabaki kwa mama tu..," he said as the crowd laughed.

"Saa zingine mtoto ako na hali mbaya, ni mama anamshughulikia. Ananyonyesha mpaka mtoto akuwe mkubwa. Baada hiyo yote unadharau mwanamke..lazima tuheshimu akina mama, bila wao hatungekuwa hapa."

Raila said women should be treated well just like men.

"If we do this, there will be love in Kenya. Countries that have developed have given women opportunities in leadership roles," he said.

"If you live women out we won't have a working nation."

The battle to woo women in different regions has been on the radar of politicians.

On Monday, the battle for the Mt Kenya region votes intensified as Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka opted to penetrate the vote-rich region through the support of grassroots women.

Kalonzo hosted a delegation of over 500 women drawn from 12 counties of Central Kenya and beyond at his Yatta farm in Machakos county.

Dressed in striking maroon dresses and congregating under the umbrella of Amka Mama group, the women said they had identified the Wiper leader as the most ideal presidential aspirant with the potential to address the challenges facing the country.

They said Kalonzo’s history in successive government had shown he was not tainted by corruption and was God-fearing, two virtues they said made him stand out among other contenders.
