CLEOPHAS MALALA: Oka, Raila union only possible if he backs Mudavadi

The situation right now does not favour ODM leader as a presidential candidate.

In Summary
  • It is high time that the ODM leader returned the favour for Western support.
  • Raila will not be able to achieve much without votes of the Luhya and Kamba communities.

I cannot rule out the possibility of a reunion between One Kenya Alliance principals and ODM leader Raila Odinga because, as they say, anything is possible in politics.

However, in such an arrangement, we need to look at our past and build on it as we go into the future. As Amani National Congress, supporters of Musalia Mudavadi and people from Western Kenya in general, we have supported Raila several times in past elections.

We supported the ODM leader in the 2007 election with Mudavadi as his running mate. We also supported Raila in 2013 polls despite the fact that Mudavadi was also on the ballot as a presidential contender. Raila managed to secure a considerable number of votes from Mudavadi's backyard. In 2017 elections, Mudavadi stepped aside and was solidly behind Raila.

We are now saying that we have supported Raila enough times. It is high time that the ODM leader returned the favour. We cannot rule out any engagements with Raila during this election season but we want the support to be reverse this time around. Let it be Raila supporting Mudavadi.

Mudavadi has demonstrated very well that he is a person who would put aside his ambitions to support others. He was willing to stand with the ODM leader in whatever political turbulence he was going through in the past.

Good friends are those who remember what their friends have done for them in the past and then return the favour. We are therefore just calling upon Raila to look at the current political dynamics and throw his weight behind Mudavadi.

The situation as it is right now does not favour Raila as a presidential candidate. Raila will not be able to achieve much without the votes of the Luhya and Kamba communities.

He needs the full support of these two regions. Without the backing of the two communities, he has a very minimal chance of becoming the president of this country. It means therefore that the best thing he could do for himself and his supporters is to support Mudavadi for the top seat.
