Chief Justice Martha Koome presided over the swearing-in of three new members of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) at the Supreme Court building on Wednesday.
The tribunal is now fully constituted with seven members as Theresa Jepkemei Chepkwony, Mutubwa Wilfred Akhonya, and Kiragu Gad Gathu took their oaths of office and will serve for a term of six years.
The three have joined chairperson, Desma Nungo and three other serving members.
During the ceremony, the CJ said the tribunal’s members must strive to live up to and meet the standards set out in the Constitution, the Political Parties Act, 2011, and other electoral laws.
“This is the only way to imbued our electoral and political disputes resolution regime with the requisite public trust and confidence that will ensure peaceful resolution of political and electoral disputes,” Koome said.
Koome added that the PPDT has a role in the protection of our democracy and realisation of Kenyans’ right to free and fair elections and the right to vote as guaranteed in Article 38 of the Constitution.
The JSC had nominated the three members after conducting an interview and were appointed by the CJ last month.
She also urged the tribunal to assure Kenyans that the disputes that will arise in the upcoming 2022 general elections will be handled well and justice served.
In his address, the tribunal’s chairperson Desma Nungo said that the team is very prepared for the next general elections.
She added that PPDT is aware of its crucial role in seeing that the country undertakes credible elections.
