The Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission is set to begin voter education for people living with Disabilities.
The Commission on Thursday held a forum to discuss ways of expanding the participation of PWDs in the electoral processes.
IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati said the Commission is collaborating with other organisations and institutions to provide Information, Education and Communications materials in braille and sign language videos for the visual and hearing impairment respectively.
He said the Commission is in the process of acquiring polling booths that can be accessed by persons who are physically challenged to ensure secrecy of the vote and convenience during marking of ballot papers by voters.
"IEBC is registering PWDs in places of their convenience during ECVR2021 and is giving priority to PWDs to register and vote in cases of long queues," Chebukati said.
"The Commission will also identify PWDs during voter registration for purposes of planning for their requirements to vote."
PWDs have been urged to be active participants in political parties.
On Monday, October 18, Chebukati said the commission has registered 491,968 new voters in two weeks.
He said in a statement that the figures represent 15.47 per cent of the target of three million voters in a month.
He said that within two weeks, the commission received and serviced a total of 49,656 transfer requests.
“The commission would like to remind all registered voters that voter transfer requests will continue being serviced at their constituency of preference,” Chebukati said.
“Voters who wish to obtain this service must appear in person before the Registration Officers at constituency office with originals of their identification documents used during registration as a voter.”
The chairperson has added that there will be no voter transfer services at Huduma Centers.
“The kits at the Huduma Centers have been opened to facilitate registration of new voters to any registration center/polling station of their choice across the country.”
