The 7the Annual Devolution Conference will finally be held next month in Makueni county, the Council of Governors has announced.

COG chairman Martin Wambora said the event will be held between November 23 and 26 at Makueni Boys High School.

“Noting that the first era of devolution is coming to an end, it is important to take stock of the journey and pave the way for the second generation of county governments,” he said.

This is the final time the conference will be held annually. Thereafter it shall be held bi-annually.

Wambora announced the new dates after chairing the full council meeting at the CoG headquarters at Delta House in Nairobi on Monday.

The conference was postponed for the second time in August. It was supposed to be held between August 23 and August 26 but was postponed due to Covid-19 fears.

Initially, the conference had been scheduled for May 3 to May 7, 2021.

August’s postponement was in line with the presidential directive suspending all public gatherings and in-person meetings.

“We must appreciate that we are living in unprecedented times which require all of us to put our health first and that of others for the safety and prosperity of our country,” Wambora said in August.

The Embu governor said their decision to finally hold the event next month has been informed by the drop in Covid-19 infections and scaled-up vaccination.

“We urge delegates to take note of the new dates and prepare to participate in the upcoming conference,” he added.

Wambora also disclosed that the council has initiated a process to document the devolution journey from 2013-2022.

It will focus on the gains, challenges and lessons learnt in the last nine years of implementing devolution.
