Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has said it is time for the Ukambani region to have new leadership politically.

The governor said on Saturday in a statement that for over 30 years, the Kamba nation has politically been behind the leadership of Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka from his days in KANU, LDP, ODM- K.

“Unfortunately, Kalonzo has never seized this opportunity to initiate development and empower the people of the region because development and how to initiate it is simply not in his DNA. It is not his fault - he is just intrinsically incapable,” Mutua said.

Mutua claimed that Kalonzo has been focusing on power, positions, disruptions, and waging the tribal card for himself and very little for the people who have kept him at the national table.

“It is time for a change. We need an ideological and paradigm shift. We need to go back to the politics of our liberation heroes like Paul Ngei. The Kalonzo Musyoka politics of "vomwe na vayetwa," (let us harden our stand however ridiculous) and "twi nja ng'endu" (let us remain proud in our poverty), have no place in any progressive society.”

The governor said the new leadership should prioritise water, tarmac roads, employment, financial empowerment, among others for the community and not just on a position for an individual.

He has called upon his counterparts from the region to come together and liberate their community from the bondage.

" I am ready to work with all to liberate the minds and livelihoods of our people. We have been mocked enough. It is time to have conversations at the household level on what we really want as a region."

Further, the governor has asked all political and development players that the Kamba Nation has awoken up from selfish leadership.

"We have shifted our alliance from the politics of poverty to the politics of development...Kalonzo is no longer the person to talk to or interact with when dealing with the Ukambani region."

Mutua has also said that the concluded Nguu/Masimba by-election which was won by an Independent Candidate Timothy Maneno proved that people have lost confidence in Kalonzo’s party.

‘I call all my supporters to be respectful and not to insult him. However, he needs to be politely reminded that the Nguu/Masimba Ward by-election has shown that over 76% of voters rejected him and Wiper. That is the current status in Ukambani region.”

Maneno won the hotly contested seat after garnering 2,894 votes, while UDA candidate David Musau got 2,223 as Wiper candidate Eisho Mwaiwa came third with 1,601 votes.

Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana had earlier congratulated Maneno, saying that the people of Nguu-Masumba made their intentions clear that they have opened a new chapter in the region’s politics.
