Strong winds expected in Northeastern, says Met

There will be strong south-easterly winds with speeds exceeding 25 knots

Strong winds are expected over parts of Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo counties, the Met department has warned.

It has indicated that there will be strong south-easterly winds with speeds exceeding 25 knots in some parts of northwestern and northeastern parts of the country.

The five-day weather forecast indicated that there will be occasional cloudiness in parts of Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi counties.

Occasional cloudiness is expected in parts of the highlands east of the Rift Valley.

David Gikungu from the Met department said rainfall is expected to continue in several parts of the highlands west of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin and the Central and South Rift Valley as well as over a few areas in the highlands east of the Rift Valley.

The counties of Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, West Pokot, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Busia, Migori, Baringo, Nakuru, Narok and Laikipia will have sunny mornings.

“However, light rains may occur over a few places. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are likely to occur over a few places during the first half of the forecast period and over several places thereafter," the forecast indicated.

"Night showers are expected over few places during the second half of the forecast period.” 

Turkana and Samburu are expected to be generally sunny with partly cloudy nights.

Daytime temperatures are likely to range from 22 to 35 degree Celsius, temperatures will be 11 and 26 degrees Celsius at night.

Sunny intervals are expected in Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi and Nairobi counties in the morning.

However, occasional cloudiness with light rains, may occur over few places.

Afternoons are likely to be generally sunny and nights partly cloudy, with the possibility of light morning and afternoon showers occurring over a few places in the Coast region.

A weather review for last week showed that the weather station in Kapenguria, West Pokot county, recorded the highest seven-day total rainfall of 148.8mm.

 The station at WRA-Kapenguria also recorded the highest amount of rainfall of 90.5 mm within 24 hours by the start of last week, while the station at Elgon Downs in Trans Nzoia county recorded 60.5mm.
