Political heavyweights from President Uhuru Kenyatta's Mt Kenya backyard will hold a meeting on Monday in Naivasha to discuss the region's unity ahead of the 2022 General Election.

The meeting comes after another one was cancelled over what was reported as cracks in the scheduled agenda and fears of infiltration by opponents.

Moses Kuria, Mwangi Kiunjuri and Martha Karua have been meeting leaders of different parties in the Mt Kenya region in a bid to consolidate a united front in the coming poll.

Former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth and ex-Kiambu Governor William Kabogo are the latest entrants into the Mt Kenya unity talks, and they are expected to attend the meeting on Monday at Lake Naivasha Resort.

They will be joined by other party officials, including former Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti (Rebuild and Restore Party), Esau Kioni of the Democratic Party (DP), Mpuru Apuri (National Ordinary People Empowerment Union) and Thuo Mathenge (The New Democrats).

According to the invite sent on Monday, members were informed that the meeting will be held on Monday following the cancellation of the previous meeting.

“Dear Hon. Member. You are invited to the Mt. Kenya Forum on the 20th September 2021 at the Lake Naivasha Resort. The conference package is Ksh 5,000 per person. Confirm attendance by Saturday 18th September," the statement read.

Elected leaders from the region, including governors, senators, and MPs, have been invited to the all-important meeting to craft the region's 2022 plans.

Speaking to the Star on Friday, The Service Party (TSP) leader Mwangi Kiunjuri said that he isn’t authorised to comment on the matter in regards to meeting on Monday.

He said that the discussion about regional unity are at the formative stage and Martha Karua is the right person to comment.

“We agreed not to disclose information to the public and I am not in a position to give you the details. Kindly contact Martha and she will brief you,” Kiunjuri said.

Kiunjuri said that the secretariat is responsible for any communication.

The New Democrat party national chairman Thuo Mathenge said that the meeting on Monday will address key topics concerned with Mt Kenya unity.

He added that the caucus should focus on how small parties within the Mount Kenya region can be popular and not campaigning for individuals within the caucus.

Thuo Mathenge, however, said anyone thinking he will be using the caucus to rise into top position ahead of 2022 is mistaken.

He claimed that there are those individuals who are trying to seek their popularity through the caucus.

“We want to form the government and this is possible if all party leaders from Mount Kenya region shun their interests and focus on one agenda of unity," he said.

A reliable source who did not want to be named has revealed that there are internal fights within the caucus.

“I want to be honest with you, the unity some leaders are preaching is just political. Leaders are trying to position themselves and this is causing more harm as we aren’t speaking in one voice," he said.
