Ruto to Parliament: Stop wasting time on AP deployment 'non-issues'

Parliamentary time should not be wasted on non-issues, Deputy President William Ruto has said.

Ruto was reacting to an article from a local daily on MPs grilling security chiefs over his own sentry changes.

Administration Police Service officers last week took over guarding Ruto's residences following the withdrawal of the elite General Service Unit. 

This made the Committee on Administration and National Security of the National Assembly summon the country’s security chiefs led by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

They are to appear before it to shed light on the replacement of Ruto’s security detail.

But Ruto via Twitter on Tuesday said the AP is a professional security service and those who think it's a downgrade are wrong.

"Parliament should instead focus on deployment to serious security situations in areas where bandits are causing mayhem and destruction,” he said.

“Do not waste time discussing my security. The security of millions of ordinary Kenyans is more important,” added the Deputy President.

 He said he was satisfied with the security personnel that he had been accorded. 

 “Parliament should focus on working closely with those in-charge of the security docket to make Kenya more stable.”

On Monday, Ruto posted pictures on his social media pages with his new security team at his official residence in Karen.

The security team comprising more than 10 officers was seen at the residence in a cordial informal meeting with Ruto.

After a few minutes of being briefed, they were taken to the lawn where they sat and took tea with the second in command.

The GSU officers also left Ruto's rural home in Sugoi, Eldoret town, his residence at Elgon View and his official Karen residence in Nairobi.

The office of the Police IG called the changeover normal, but Ruto's communication secretary David Mugonyi said the state was undermining the DP's safety and termed the changes 'diabolical'.
