Senators broke down in tears as they viewed the body of their colleague Victor Prengei at the Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi on Wednesday.

Emotions ran higher when the senator’s widow Catherine Chepngetich arrived at the morgue.

Unable to walk on her own and too grief-stricken to speak, Chepngetich was held by relatives and senators Falhada Iman and Naomi Waqo.

The body had been transferred to the morgue from Umash Funeral home in Nakuru following the death of the nominated senator on Monday.

Prengei, the first Ogiek to sit in Parliament, succumbed to his injuries following a road accident in Nakuru on Monday night. He was 37.

On Wednesday, lawmakers led by Speaker Kenneth Lusaka, trooped to the Lee to view the body.

They sobbed as others fought back tears as they viewed the remains of the man they had worked with since 2017.

“This is a very big loss. Prengei has been with us in the Senate. He is a very calm fellow. A senator who was very passionate about land matters,” a sombre Lusaka said.

Deputy Speaker Margaret Kamar (Uasin Gishu), Mutula Kilonzo Jr (Makueni), Ledama Olekina (Narok), Kipchumba Murkomen (Elgeyo Marakwet), Anuar Loitiptip (Lamu), Falhada (nominated) and Waqo (nominated) and Naomi Shiyonga (nominated) accompanied the speaker.

“It is sad. I can’t imagine or believe what happened. His death was a shocker. He fought for the land rights of the marginalised communities,” Murkomen said.

The speaker said he has appointed a seven-member team to work alongside the Prengei family on the funeral arrangements.

They are senators Susan Kihika (Nakuru), Enoch Wambua (Kitui), Philip Mpaayei (Kajiado), Cleophas Malala (Kakamega), Anuar Loitiptip (Lamu), Rose Nyamunga (nominated) and Millicent Omanga (nominated).

The team will announce the burial date in consultation with the family.
