A new police commander was on Wednesday posted to the eastern region to oversee ongoing operations in the troubled Marsabit and Isiolo areas.

Turkana county police commander Ronald Opili was promoted and posted to Eastern as the regional commander to take over from Noah Mwivanda who was recalled to police headquarters.

Police headquarters said Robinson Mboloi was Wednesday, August 4 named the commander for Marsabit county to take over Martin Kibet.

Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai said the changes are normal and aimed at boosting operations in the areas.

The area has been experiencing sporadic attacks which led to the deaths of residents and the stealing of hundreds of animals.

Local leaders signed an agreement to maintain peace ahead of the 2022 polls.

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission says it completed the process of finding a permanent solution to the conflict in Marsabit county on July 22.

Even though details of what was agreed on were not made public, the commission said decisions of the meeting will be submitted to the National Security Advisory Board for review.

This followed instructions from President Uhuru Kenyatta when he met the leaders of Marsabit on July 15 and called for lasting peace in the area.

The reported cases of violence in Marsabit between the communities of Borana, Gabra and Rendille have left more than 100 people dead and displaced thousands of residents since the beginning of the year.

Policing is a key factor in managing the issue in the regions. In Rift Valley, more than 400 new police officers were deployed to various stations to boost ongoing operations in troubled places.

The areas include Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, Laikipia and Samburu.

The National Police Service has regional commanders serving in the former eight provinces. They include Augustine Nthumbi (Nairobi), Fred Ochieng (Rift Valley), Peris Muthoni (Western), Titus Karuri (Central), Karanja Muiruri (Nyanza), Rono Bunei (North Eastern), Opili (Eastern) and Manaseh Musyoka (Coast).

At the headquarters, the service has various departments, which enhances their operations.

They include operations, logistics, gender, inspections, complaints, personnel, planning and community policing.
