The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has said that six mortar bombs were discovered by the fishermen in Lake Victoria on Wednesday.

The fishermen were on their daily routine fishing expedition in the lake when they came across the unusual metals.

They had cast their nets in the still waters of the world’s second largest fresh water lake, in the hope of a handsome catch.

After discovering the mortars, the fishermen informed the matter to DCI detectives based at Mbita, Homa Bay County.

Without hesitation, the sleuths notified their Bomb Disposal and Hazardous Materials counterparts based in Kisumu, who rushed to Mbita and took possession of the cache.

The detectives are expected to give more details about the mortars after conducting their investigations, and thereafter destroy the bombs in accordance with the law.

In 2019, workers at a construction site in Isiolo found a hand grenade near the office of Isiolo Woman Representative.

The workers were digging a foundation of an upcoming building at Kiwanjani when they found the grenade buried two feet under.

The grenade was later detonated by Kenya Defence Forces bomb experts, led by Sergeant Ogolla, who said the explosive was being used for training and was not a combat grenade.
