Three people have been arrested for defrauding mobile money operators in Isiolo county.

Mary Hinga, Samwel Ndirangu and Josephine Tanui were arrested by DCI detectives on Friday evening in Samburu county.

DCI director George Kinoti said the operation to trace and arrest the suspects was launched following numerous complaints of Mpesa fraud in the county.

Kinoti said the suspects approached mobile money operators as dealers.

This, they did in pretext of selling sim cards and other products at discounted prices.

Once they get a customer, they switch the phones used to effect money transactions before flushing their float.

During the arrest, a motor vehicle make Toyota Vitz which the suspects have been using was confiscated.

Kinoti said they also recovered several sim cards from the fraudsters .

Last month, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations urged Kenyans to formally report experiences with fraudsters to the authorities for necessary action to be initiated.

DCI said that it is in receipt of numerous complaints from members of the public who report to have fallen victim of a suspected fraud syndicate.

Whereas detectives have previously arrested the fraudsters after receiving complaints , DCI pointed out that the victims hardly show up at the police stations thus weakening the evidential aspect upon arraignment of the suspects.
