Second phase of polio vaccination planned in 13 counties

The Ministry of Health has announced that it will start the second phase of the polio vaccination campaign in 13 counties that are at high risk.

The ministry said on Thursday that the vaccination team will conduct the exercise through house-to-house visits, an exercise that will be conducted in strict conformity with Covid-19 health protocols.

The exercise will start this Saturday, until Wednesday, targeting children under five years.

The polio vaccine is also available in all public health facilities.

The first campaign was conducted on May 22 to 26, where 2.6 million children were vaccinated against polio.

The government is targeting to vaccinate about 3.4 million children by the end of the second drive.

The targeted counties are Garissa, Isiolo, Kajiado, Kiambu, Kilifi, Kitui, Lamu, Machakos, Mandera, Mombasa, Nairobi, Tana River, and Wajir counties.

MoH said that the second phase is to ensure full protection of children and to stop the transmission of the poliovirus.

The campaign aims to vaccinate 249,391 children in Garissa, 255,885 in Mandera, 51,206 in Isiolo, 180,714 in Wajir, 175,425 in Kitui, 85,020 in Tana River, 25,104 in Lamu, 233,770 in Machakos, 330,465 in Kiambu, 327,338 in Kilifi, 234,197 in Kajiado, 965,243 in Nairobi and 323,620in Mombasa.
