President Uhuru Kenyatta is among the state officials attending the State Funeral Service for the founding President of Zambia Kenneth Kaunda.

Kaunda succumbed to pneumonia in June at the of 97.

Uhuru was accompanied by Chief of Staff in State House Nzioka Waita.

Waita posted on his Twitter account that he had arrived in Zambia’s capital Lusaka for the event.

The president had concluded an official visit to France on Thursday before making his way to Zambia.

Kaunda led Zambia into independence from Britain and went on to rule the country from 1964 to 1991.

He joined the Northern Rhodesian African National Congress in 1951 as one of the people fighting for independence from the British.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is among the leaders who have also arrived in Lusaka.

Upon his travel to Zambia, Ramaphosa appointed the Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga to serve as Acting President.

Ramaphosa’s deputy David Mabuza is receiving medical treatment in Russia.

Kaunda will be buried next week at a private ceremony for family and invited guests.
