Korane's Sh233m graft case adjourned after documentation hitch

Defense didn't have the documents that the first witness was referring to.

The first witness to take the stand against Garissa Governor Ali Korane has been stood down.

Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti stood down Victor Ogutu because the defense didn't have the documents that he was referring to.

Ogoti said it will not be fair to proceed with the hearing when the defense does not have documents bring referred to by the witness.

The prosecution did not object to the adjournment saying it's important that all parties are on the same page in order to save judicial time.

Before being stood down Ogutu said he was the program manager at Kenya Urban Support Program.

The project in question was a conditional grant and its purpose was to establish and strengthen urban institution to deliver improved services and infrastructure except for Mombasa and Nairobi towns.

Ogutu says the project was funded by the World Bank.

The court heard that the total grant disbursed was Sh11.4 billion and Garissa was granted Sh233 million.

"The funds were to finance infrastructure investment in the urban areas in municipalities," Ogutu said.

In the case, Korane is charged alongside other county officials with several counts of corruption.

The case resumes hearing on June 28 when Ogutu is expected to continue with his testimony.
