CAMPAIGNS OR DEVELOPMENT?

Lenku launches projects in vote-rich Kajiado subcounties

Critics say governor is keen on endearing himself to voters ahead of his reelection bid next year

In Summary

Kajiado governor however maintains initiatives are purely development projects

The ongoing tarmacking of roads in Kajiado urban centres is part of the county's rapid results initiative programme aimed at opening up populous estates, says Governor Joseph Ole Lenku.

Most of the roads become muddy and impassable during the rainy seasons, Lenku said in Ngong town on Saturday.

The governor said his RRI programme should not be seen as a political initiative ahead of next year's general election.

Critics had claimed the governor was initiating projects in vote-rich areas as a strategy for next year's reelection bid.

But Lenku said the project was purely development initiatives.

Ngong town is in Kajiado North constituency which has the biggest number of voters at 127,953 followed by Kajiado East with 102,804 registered voters according to IEBC’s records in 2017.

“Today, my rapid results initiative diary took us to Kajiado North where I commissioned the tarmacking of three roads,” Lenku said on Saturday.

He said the expansion of the road network and opening up of highly populous estates in Kajiado North was one of the key items in his development plan.

The roads to be opened up include Cleanshelf-AIC-Saitoti Hospital-Nakeel Primary School in Nkaimurunya ward, Juanco-Ole Polos road in Oloolua ward and the Ring Road around the new market in Kiserian.

The governor assured residents that all his development promises will be fulfilled.

"Soon, the fruits of commitment to change the landscape of this subcounty will be there for all to see," Lenku said at Ole Polos.

With the general election drawing closer, Lenku is seen to be endearing himself to the people of the north, whose section of MCAs had withdrawn their support for the governor on claims he had ignored them in job distribution.

The MCAs led by Onesmus Ngogoyo walked out on Lenku two years ago and are now running a campaign to have him voted out next year.

“Nothing will change our minds on what he is trying to do in Kajiado North. That is his way of saving his face after ignoring and abusing the leaders from the North," Ngogoyo said.

Lenku has also been blamed for lack of interest in carrying on with projects that were initiated by his predecessor David Nkedienye.

Lack of drugs in hospitals and few ambulances are also among the negatives cited by the governor's critics who say he has failed to deliver.

Ngogoyo said Lenku has warned all his executive members not to talk to MCAs or the media about what is happening in the departments that have been 'run down.'
