702,000 Kenyans receive Covid jab

Kenya has so far inoculated 702,170 people since the exercise commenced last month.

Data released by the Health Ministry shows the largest composition are members of the public including those aged above 18 years who account for 397,539 followed by healthcare workers at 141,146.

A total of 106,147 teachers have been reached with the jab while 57,338 of the number are security officers.

“In terms of gender, men continue to exhibit a lot of enthusiasm in this exercise compared to women. 393,261 males have so far been vaccinated compared to 308,526 females,” Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said.

This comes even as the country recorded 241 new Covid-19 positive cases from a sample size of 2,515 representing a positivity rate of 9.6 per cent.

Nairobi has recorded the highest number after inoculating 223,992 people followed by Nakuru with 42,145, Uasin Gishu with 35,542, Kiambu with 35,244 and Nyeri with 25,345.

From the data, Kakamega has reached 18,001 people, Kajiado 17,791, Murang’a 17,534, Kisumu 17,424, Meru 17,392, Mombasa 16,996, Nyandarua 14,260, Trans Nzoia 13,954, Laikipia 13,889, Bungoma 13,442, Machakos 12,777, Nandi 12,139, Embu 11,689, Kirinyaga 10,946, Kericho 10,886 with Kitui closing the list of counties that have vaccinated more than 10,000 people at 10,192.

Other counties include Homa Bay with 9,679, Kisii with 8,660, Vihiga with 8,614, Busia with 7,418, Nyamira 6,427, Baringo 6,363, Bomet 6,211, Siaya 5,996, Elgeyo Marakwet 5,399, Migori 5,259, Tharaka Nithi 5,185, Narok 4,873, Makueni 4,473 and Kilifi 4,332.

Samburu has vaccinated 2,923, West Pokot 2,857, Taita Tavet 2,650, Turkana 2,627, Kwale 2,409, Wajir 1,928, Garissa 1,766, Mandera 1,565 and Isiolo with 1,392 people vaccinated.

Kagwe announced that 636 patients had recovered from the virus, 487 from the home based care programme with the other 149 having been discharged from various health facilities in the country.

The total recoveries now stand at 102,278 out of which 74,292 are from home based care isolation and 27,986 from various health facilities.

“Sadly, 20 deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours, one having occurred in the last 24 hours, 11 on diverse dates within the last one month while eight are late deaths reported after conducting facility record audits,” Kagwe said.

This pushes the cumulative deaths since the pandemic struck last year to 2,501.

According to Kagwe, 1,651 patients are currently admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 6,161 are on the home based care and isolation.

“250 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit, 57 of whom are on ventilator support and 150 on supplemental oxygen. 43 patients are on observation.”

The CS noted that another 201 patients were separately on supplementary oxygen with 190 of them being in the general wards and 11 in the high dependency units.

The new cases were distributed as follows; Nairobi 153, Meru 18, Uasin Gishu 14, Machakos 10, Kiambu and Nakuru nine cases each, Mombasa eight, Nandi six, Kitui three, Bungoma, Nyandarua and Kajiado two cases each while Kilifi, Murang’a, Nyeri, West Pokot and Kakamega recording one case each.
