KCPE: Top special needs candidate scores 420 marks

Nine candidates scored 400 marks.

A total of 2,675 candidates with special needs sat the KCPE this year.

This is an increase of 2019's 2,407.

Education CS George Magoha said the majority category of the special needs was physical disabilities which was the case of 1,200 candidates.

Hearing and visual impairment were the second and third highest categories.

The highest candidate with special needs, Brian Otundo from Sethill Academy scored 420 marks recording an improvement from last year.

In 2019, the highest in this category scored 414 marks.

"Performance of 2020 was commendable and SNE children given a fair and conducive environment can excel," Magoha said.

Nine candidates scored 400 marks and above. 318 candidates scored 300 to 399 marks while 897 scored 200to 299 marks.

Overall, female candidates from public schools topped the KCPE 2020 exam.

Faith Mumo emerged top with 433 marks. She is from Kari Mwailu Primary School in Makueni county.

Nanzala Wesonga from Chogoria Girls Primary School was the second best candidate with 432 marks.

Angel Murithi was the third best student, scoring 431 marks. She tied with Samuel Wanyonyi.

8,091 candidates scored above 400 marks, 282,000 scored between 300 to 399 marks and 589,00 scored 200 to299 marks.

Girls performed slightly better in English, Kiswahili and Kenyan Sign Language.

 Meanwhile, boys performed better in Maths, Science and Social Studies.

 Magoha said overall performance improved compared to 2019, although the mark of the highest candidate dropped from 440.
