Deputy President William Ruto's talks with Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya begun a year ago, Turkana Governor Josephat Nanok has said.

Last week, Ruto and Oparanya met at Mahali Mzuri camp at the heart of the vast Masai Mara National Reserve.

Being Raila Odinga’s deputy in ODM, Oparanya's meeting with the country's second in command swirled speculations of looming political realignments.

But speaking to the Nation on Tuesday, Nanok said the talks between Ruto and Oparanya are now coming to an end.

“This is just the end of the dialogue and discussion and that in no way says there is a coalition with Raila Odinga,” he said.

“They have not had such talks. There is no coalition with Raila Odinga.”

Nanok said political alliances keep shifting with interests after every election.

“I believe that what is driving Oparanya and other leaders is also shifting alliances and interests. This is the period of transfers,” he said.

A  day after the meeting, Oparanya trooped to Raila's home to reportedly brief him about the talks.

However, allies of the DP from Mt Kenya have also rubbished any such coalition, saying Ruto and Raila were ideologically incompatible.

On Monday, Ruto's office said the DP has neither met Raila’s emissaries nor sent people to negotiate any political deal.

Ruto’s director of communication Emmanuel Talam told the Star that the meeting between Ruto and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya had nothing to do with Raila.

It was not immediately clear if Ruto's interest is only in snatching Oparanya from ODM.
