The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has suspended the process of identifying the party's presidential flag bearer.

In a statement on Thursday, ODM secretary General Edwin Sifuna said the party's National Elections Board has resolved to halt members application for the position.

According to Sifuna the party will now focus on pushing the Building Bridges Initiative agenda.

"After consultation with party leadership and the NEB, the party has resolved to postpone the remaining NEB processes on this matter to focus on the BBI process," Sifuna said.

He added, "The NEB will therefore suspend the vetting and/or further processing of the applications until after conclusions of the BBI process."

This comes just hours after it was established that party leader Raila Odinga could be on the ballot as a presidential candidate in 2022.

The 76-year-old, a former prime minister, has run unsuccessfully for president four times -1997, 2007, 2013 and 2017- polls.

The Party, by Wednesday's deadline, had received nomination papers from three candidates who wish to unseat President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022.

They are Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, Kakamega's Wycliffe Oparanya and Raila.

Both Joho and Oparanya are close confidants of the ODM supremo and joint deputy party leaders.

Elections board chairperson Catherine Mumma said the NEB shall scrutinize the three applications.
