Machakos Alfred Mutua will meet MCAs next Monday before they table the  Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, 2020 on Tuesday.

Mutua met with the 33 MCAs out of the 50 members on Thursday in his office led by Minority Leader Alex Kamitu who wanted to be informed about the BBI agenda.

“They further informed me that they had received text messages inviting them for a BBI meeting in Athi River and they wanted to know if I was privy to details of that meeting.”

He added that the MCAs informed him that they have refused to be used to rubber-stamp impunity and suppression of the will of the majority.

“I have resolved to hold a meeting with them next week Monday, with an aim of resolving the crisis before the Bill comes to the floor of the House on Tuesday.”

He added that “They also told me that they have no problem with BBI but they are concerned that it is now being used to play local politics, and they are wondering how the Bill will pass if meetings are being held in isolation.”

According to Mutua, the 33 MCAs believed that the BBI Bill is politically driven, “aimed at isolating some critical leaders in Ukambani region, and they had resolved not to be party to it.”

“They consulted with me on how they will navigate the BBI process when it comes up for voting at the assembly.”
