Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa has questioned the move taken by some Woman Representatives in drumming up support for the Constitutional amendment through the BBI Bill, 2020.

Jumwa said that the document will abolish the current 47 Woman Rep seats.

“I was surprised to see some of the leaders sitting on the same position of Woman Rep and others who would like to clinch to the same seat were the first to append their signatures for the abolishment of the same seat,” Jumwa said.

She was speaking at Karen, Nairobi after attending a meeting hosted by Deputy President William Ruto.

The meeting attracted 146 MPS, seven governors, and other leaders who were invited.

The MP added that the Woman Rep post has been useful to her constituents.

“Do these women know what they are doing or the importance of those seats or they just signed for the sake of signing?”

“I have said that I will not accept abolition of the Woman Rep post because that is where some funds meant to help women are coming from.”

Though the 47 woman representative positions have been scrapped and replaced with an equal number in the Senate, a closer analysis of the report indicates a win compared to the current setup.

If proposals contained in the 214-page document are passed, the country could attain the elusive two-thirds gender requirement.

The report seeks to delete Article 98 1 (a), which pegged the number of senators to 47.

The team further proposes the scrapping of the seats of the 16 members nominated by political parties.
