15 more die as Lang'ata, Malindi flagged as virus hotspots

Residents of Nairobi’s Lang’ata, Imenti North in Meru and Malindi in Kilifi have been urged to be cautious after the three areas were flagged as Covid-19 hotspots.

Lang’ata recorded 42 new cases on Monday and 48 on Tuesday, leading in the number of infections in the county in two consecutive days.

Imenti North recorded 47 new cases on Monday and nine on Tuesday, while Malindi town recorded 24 new cases on Monday and eight on Tuesday.

Other areas in Nairobi marked as hotspots include Starehe, Embakasi and Kibera.

“That tells you that if you live in Lang’ata then there are high infection rates within that area, and therefore you should be very careful. Similarly, in Meru county, Imenti North area is highly infected and one needs to be very careful when you are in that area,” Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said.

“I don’t say that you should not be careful anywhere else but I am just saying you should be more careful in those areas.”

The country registered 15 more deaths on Tuesday, pushing the fatalities to 1,302.

The CS in a statement announced that 925 more people tested positive for the virus from a sample size of 5,529.

The total caseload now stands at 71,729 from cumulative tests of 798,585 conducted in the country to date.

“As of today, a total of 1,237 patients are admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 6,257 are in home-based isolation and care. Sixty two patients are in the intensive care unit, 26 of whom are on ventilator support and 32 on supplemental oxygen” the CS said.

“Another 92 patients are separately on supplementary oxygen out of whom 69 are in the general wards while 23 are in the high dependency unit.”

The CS further announced that a total of 2,352 healthcare workers tested positive for the virus out of whom 30 have succumbed to the disease.

Kagwe said 1,018 patients have recovered from the disease, 850 from home-based care while 169 have been discharged from various hospitals.

The total recoveries in the country now stand at 47,262.

In terms of distribution of cases per county, Nairobi recorded 358 new infections followed by Kiambu with 102, Mombasa with 59, Nakuru and Nyeri with 39 cases each, Machakos and Busia with 32 cases each, Kisumu with 29 and Kilifi with 28 cases.

Kajiado recorded 25 new cases, Siaya 23, Meru and Laikipia 20 each, Kisii 15, Uasin Gishu 14, Bungoma 13, Baringo 12, Nyamira 10, Embu and Vihiga nine each, Lamu eight and Tharaka Nithi seven.

Other counties include Makueni with five, Samburu three, Kericho, Kakakmega, and Murang’a two cases each while Kwale, Kirinyaga, West Pokot, Garissa, Bomet, Migori, Trans Nzoia and Turkana had one case each.
