• The party in a statement on Saturday said the formula, Y=X*3/2-290 seeks to control the size of the parliament to a maximum of 435 members.
• The formula in the worst-case scenario will ensure no single member of one gender is elected in a general election.
Thirdway Alliance party has crafted a formula seeking to end the current debate on two-thirds gender parity.
The party in a statement on Saturday said the formula, Y=X*3/2-290 seeks to control the size of the parliament to a maximum of 435 members.
The statement signed by National chair Miruru Waweru and secretary-general Fredrick Okango said in the formula in the worst-case scenario will ensure no single member of one gender is elected in a general election.
“The new version of PunguzaMizigo Kenya has brought forth a more rational proposal that will not only ensure that the two-third gender rule is achieved but also reduce the cost of running parliament t by capping it to approximately Sh5 billion from the current Sh36 billion,” part of the statement read.
According to the party, the Y represents the seats reserved for the gender winning the minority seats and X are the seats won by the gender winning majority seats.
" While our formula proposes to abolish women representative positions, our formula has addressed the gender question comprehensively…the gender winning minority seats can be able to win 97 seats to attain 1/3 of the 290 seats," the statement said.
The party further said IEBC will rank the gender Y candidate’s performance in a general election by votes earned as a percentage of votes cast, list all the gender Y candidates’ performance in descending order of percentage earned and allocate the Z seats in descending order till the seats are fully allotted.
The party added that the formula will ensure that even the marginalised areas will have a fair share of top seats since they will be distributed based on an individual’s performance as opposed to absolutely votes garner.
“The formula will settle the elusive gender question permanently and allow the country to move forward to tackle other more agent issues," the statement read.
The party has also said that it will continue to provide practical solutions to the country.
The PunguzaMizigo Initiative which was relaunched on March 18, 2020 after the failure of the first has garnered 770,000 signatures to date.
The party is targeting one million signatures through its website.
