Malala asks for extra security over 'assassination threats'

Says he has evidence of credible threats to harm, injure or eliminate him.

Kakamega senator Cleophas Malala has asked for enhanced security over alleged assassination threats.

 In a letter to Senate Clerk Jeremiah Nyegenye on Thursday, Malala said he has evidence of credible threats to harm, injure, eliminate or assassinate him.

"There are credible and well detailed reports of real threats upon my life, the evidence which is laid bare and detailed in the letter from my advocates referenced above and now within your knowledge," he said.

 

"As a Member of Parliament, I now request your office to take immediate action to enhance the security detail assigned to me, including additional security provided immediately to my family and my residences in Kakamega and Nairobi."

Malala who doubles up as the Senate deputy minority whip claims the death threats are attacks towards independence of the Senate.

"Such illegal actions of organized extra judicial killings are meant to intimidate members of the Senate and usurp the authority and independence of the Senate," he said.

This comes barely 10 days after Malala and two other senators were arrested hours before casting their vote on the debate county revenue sharing formula.

 Malala who was released from police custody unconditionally after spending the night at the Mumias Police Station said the arrest was mare intimidation based on his stand on the debate.

It emerged that Malala was not booked in the Occurrence Book at the station by the officers who drove him in.

Police indicated that Malala had been arrested for violating of social distancing requirements while distributing sanitisers in Mumias over the weekend.
