An elderly woman who was gang-raped by five men in Nyamira North subcounty last month has died from her injuries.

Pacifica Kemuma Omara,62, was going home in Nyamonge village in Bokeira sublocation on the night of July 22 when she was confronted by a gang of five men who dragged her into a thicket and raped her in turns.

Kemuma was the following day rushed to Nyamusi subcounty hospital where she was treated and discharged.

But while at home, her condition worsened and she was taken to Nyamira County Referral Hospital where she died on Monday.

Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident. Police are holding Daniel Rioba, 28, Geoffrey Obongo, 17, and Ronald Ongocho, 32. Two other suspects are still at large.

Kemuama's son Edward Omara called upon the authorities to help get justice for his late mother.

“I do not think my mother wronged anyone. My prayer and that of our entire family is to have justice done for this act of brutality,” Omara told the Star on Wednesday.

Nyamira county commissioner Amos Mariba said the three suspects will be arraigned as the two others are pursued.

"Three suspects have so far been arrested waiting to be arraigned as police officers carry out investigations to arrest the two others who are at large. This is an act of total inhumanity and the government will ensure the law takes its course on the accused persons,” Mariba said.
