10 more die as Kenya's virus numbers rise to 14,805

Kenya on Wednesday recorded 637 new cases of Covid-19, raising the country's total  to 14,805.

The new positives were drawn from the 4,275 people whose samples were tested within 24 hours, out of which all except 14 were Kenyans.

Health CAS Rashid Aman  said in terms of gender, 361 were males and 276 were females. Age wise, the youngest was a one year old, while the oldest was 88 years.

 
 
 
 

On a positive note, 499 patients have recovered from the disease, bringing  the total number of recoveries in the country so far to 6,757.

Out of this, 406 patients were from home based programme and 93 from various medical facilities.

However, 10 more patients succumbed to the virus, raising fatalities in the country to 260.

According to the Ministry of Health, hypertension and diabetes are the leading underlying causes that lead to the death of Covid-19 patients in Kenya.

Acting Director General of Health Patrick Amoth said this category of people combined lead with a 33 per cent of the deaths.

Nairobi continues to lead with the highest number of infections as Mombasa records a steady reduction.

The 637 new cases were distributed in Nairobi 342, Machakos 85, Kajiado 57, Kiambu 51, Nakuru 22, Mombasa 17, Nyeri 13, Busia 10, Muranga nine, Uasin Gishu six, Bomet three, Kericho three, Kisii three, Marsabt two, while Narok, Vihiga, Meru, Embu, Garissa, Homabay, Kakamega, Kilifi, Kirinyaga, Kisumu,  Kitui and Laikipia had one case each.

 

The cases in Nairobi was from; Kamukunji 944) Wstlands (32), Langata (31) Embakasi South 26), Dagoretti North (24), Embakasi East (24), Kasarani (23), Embakasi West (19), Kibra (18), Makadara (17), Starehe (17), Ruaraka (14), Embakasi Central (13), Embakasi North (11), Roysambu (11) Mathare (10) and Dagoretti South (8).

 

Meanwhile, President Uhuru Kenyatta accepted a request from the Council of Governors to reschedule the Extra-Ordinary Summit that was to be held on Friday to discuss the coronavirus containment measures.

 
 

A statement from State House Spokesperson Kanze Dena on Wednesday said the meeting will be held on Monday.

"His Excellency the President has acceded to the request by the Council of Governors to reschedule the 5th Extra-Ordinary Session of the National and County Governments Co-ordinating Summit," it read.

The meeting is expected to address the level of preparedness across the 47 counties in containing the pandemic that has claimed more than 200 lives in the country since March 13, 2020.
