The University of Nairobi has shelved its earlier plan to reopen in September after three of its employees tested positive for the coronavirus.

The decision is part of the university senate— the body in charge of academic affairs— recommendations after meeting on Wednesday and part of the discussion was to seeks to ensure health safety of staff and students.

Stephen Kiama, the University's Vice Chancellor says the senate will now give new reopening dates.

One of the likely scenario is to consider reopening in mid-November subject to flattening of the curve.

However, the VC says teaching and learning will continue virtually and no student scheduled to graduate this year should fail to do so because of Covid-19.

“Faculties and students will continue to engage online.  It has been happening but there are some challenges that we are working to address," Kiama told the Star on phone.

In case of a delay in reopening, Kiama says they will carry out admission and orientation of new students virtually pending determination of reporting dates.

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha in June announced that schools will reopen in January 2021.

However, the reopening institutions of higher learning was pegged on a case by case basis depending on their preparedness.

For technical and vocational training institutions, they will begin a phased reopening in September.

Some 20,191 finalist diploma and certificate students will report first to write final exams cut short by the closure of learning institutions in March.

The Kenya National Examination Council tests will take about two weeks in the first phase of the institutions' reopening.
