President Uhuru Kenyatta has given a major boost to two youthful innovators behind locally manufactured hospital beds.
He has instructed the government to procure 500 beds.
The beds are an innovation by 26-year-old Mungai Gathogo and Joseph Muhinja, 35.
The beds that are made from locally sourced material from their workshop in Githunguri, Kiambu county, will be subjected to standardisation tests by the Kenya Bureau of Standards.
They will be a vital aid to public hospitals that are reeling under the pressure of Covid-19 related hospital admissions.
Uhuru on Wednesday dispatched Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU) Secretary Andrew Wakahiu and Kiambu County Commissioner Wilson Wanyanga to Githunguri to assess the beds and convey the government’s decision.
During a state address on July 6 where he announced the phased reopening of the economy, Uhuru said focus has to shift from reliance on bailouts to innovative solutions to problems brought about by the coronavirus.
Last week, Deputy President William Ruto said he will invest in the business of another two men who created innovative furniture that can transform from a table to a bench.
He made the pledge when the two - Stephen Odhiambo and Dennis Omondi -visited him at his Karen residence to collect their balance for making the DP the furniture.
In a tweet on Thursday, he said, “ I had their balance, which they asked me to top up and buy a specialised machine that will help them fasten their workmanship."
