The Mater Hospital is set to take four months salary cut from employees as Coronavirus bites.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the CEO Prof Dominic Mwenja said the hospital had to put in place measures to try and save all the jobs in the hospital.

"All staff will unfortunately take a pay cut in the month of June, July, August and September in a graduated scale according to their pay. Details will be communicated in the individual letters," he said.

He added that since patient numbers have reduced drastically, the hospital will remain at an optimal operational level.

"This means that we will send a considerate number of staff on unpaid leave but cushion them with 50% of the new graduated salary," Mwenja added.

He said that the groups will alternate accordingly, i.e one month on leave and the following month on duty.

And this will continue to be in effect for a period of four months after which the hospital will review the situation.

Last week, at least 13,000 surgeries in Kenya were cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic, a study showed.

The number will rise to 21,000 if the disruptions continue for another three months and more patients will face lengthy waits for their health issues to be attended to.

The cancelled procedures include cancer-related surgeries, orthopedic procedures and non-emergency C-sections where mothers were advised to just go for normal delivery.

The figures are based on a modelling study published in the British Journal of Surgery.
