More than 400 households from four wards in Kisii county have been displaced by landslides and floods.

The affected  wards are Sensi, Bogeka, Bogusero and Magenche.

Speaking to the press separately, MCAs Paul Angwenyi (Sensi), Charles Nyagoto (Bogeka), Richard Atang’a (Bogusero) and Timothy Ogugu (Magenche) said the situation is worrying, especially at a time the country is fighting against coronavirus.

Angwenyi said 100 households that have been affected in his area lost  household items, crops and and livestock  on Sunday.

He now fears there might be an outbreak of waterborne diseases if the situation persists.

“A hundred households from my ward have been affected by the floods. Many of their houses have been submerged,” Angwenyi said.

Nyagogo, who also has an equal number of affected households, asked the county disaster management team to put measures in place to assist the victims.

“Many of our people are really suffering as a result of the heavy downpour. We are facing a challenge of addressing the problem because of coronavirus,” Nyagoto said.

He added that more than 10 culverts that have been enabling smooth flow of rainwater have been destroyed thus worsening the situation.

Ogugu said some 150 people in Mokubo village have been rendered homeless after a landslide destroyed their houses and crops.

He said the road from Eberege-Etago, linking Kenyenya and Etago subcounties has been cut off, trees felled and three houses buried.

“I am appealing to a geologist to visit all those areas that are prone to landslides to find out the causes and solutions,” Ogugu said.

The leaders urged well wishers to support the affected families with food and bedding.

The victims have been advised to move to safer grounds.
