WHO launches coronavirus broadcast messaging on WhatsApp

The platform will enable at least two billion people globally get direct access to information about COVID-19.

The World Health Organisation on Friday partnered with WhatsApp and Facebook to launch a messaging service to raise awareness on coronavirus.

The platform will enable at least two billion people globally to get direct access to information from the health organisation.

"This messaging service will provide the latest news and information on coronavirus, including details on symptoms and how people can protect themselves and others," WHO announced on its website.

"It also provides the latest situations reports and numbers in real-time to help government decision-makers protect the health of their populations".

Globally, at least 284,525 people have tested positive for the virus, which has claimed more than 11,842 lives.

Some 93,575 people have recovered successfully, while 170,999 (95 per cent) remain in mild condition as 8,109 (5 per cent ) are serious or critical.

In Africa, 40 countries have now reported 1,003 confirmed cases of infection, including 26 fatalities.

Zimbabwe is the latest to confirm its first case of infection on Saturday.

Last week, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe announced that Kenya has seven patients who are in stable condition. The patients were put in isolation at the Mbagathi Hospital in Nairobi

On Friday, Kagwe announced additional measures imposed by the government to contain the spread of Covid-19 in the country, including a reduction of passengers in matatus to ensure social distancing.

Other measures include the limitation of shoppers in supermarkets and disinfecting the Nairobi central business district.
