Kisumu county administration has closed markets for three weeks in a coronavirus control measure.

Governor Anyang' Nyong'o said the situation will be reviewed at the end of the period and an announcement made.

Every public service vehicle will introduce passenger records (point of boarding and destination) to help with contact tracing.

Nyong'o also suspended sporting events, workshops and seminars and weddings.

He also ordered a temporary closure of night clubs, bars and places of worship.

The governor said that the dead must be buried within 48 hours and attendance limited to close family members.

The County Emergency Response Committee made the resolutions announced by the governor on Wednesday.

All hospital visitations shall be limited to only two visitors per patient.

“All service providers shall ensure adequate reticulation of potable water to all public places within Kisumu (supermarkets, market centres, bus parks, social public parks, etc),” Nyong'o said.

The county is providing water and soap and hand sanitisers in all public places.

Nyong'o said awareness campaigns through radio talk shows, public address system and distribution of related information materials are ongoing.

“We continue to conduct capacity building and training for all health care workers including community health workers,” he said.

Further, the county has instituted heightened disease surveillance and an efficient referral system equipped with ambulance and trained personnel.

Nyong'o said they are setting up more isolation wards in Kombewa, Ahero, Muhoroni, Nyakach, Chulaimbo, Nyahera and Katito hospitals with a total bed capacity of 35.

“We continue to provide commodities and medical supplies to all public health facilities. We have established a psychological support and trauma management centre at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referal Hospital,” he said.

The governor also noted that they have commenced training and capacity building of all community health workers.

A County Incident Command Centre at the Department of Health offices in Prosperity House is also in place.
