The threat to impeach Deputy President William Ruto hangs over Parliament after it was revealed two days ago.

Leader of Majority Aden Duale reignited the matter during a debate on President Uhuru Kenyatta’s reservations on the Law of Contract Bill.

The Garissa Township MP stood on a point of order, saying ODM chairman John Mbadi and Kikuyu Town MP Kimani Ichung’wah were consulting loudly.

He claimed the two were discussing the impeachment which was floated by Siaya Senator James Orengo last weekend.

The senator said he would in two weeks sponsor an impeachment motion against Ruto on the fake Sh39 billion arms deal and the killing of a police officer.

But Duale termed the plot “a most frivolous purported impeachment of a deputy president”, saying those behind it would fail.

He cited the case of the attempted impeachment of former Devolution CS Anne Waiguru and her Education counterpart Jacob Kaimenyi which failed.

“Those seeking to remove the DP are wasting their time,” Duale said, adding that it would end the same way as for the ministers.

“I defended both Waiguru and Kaimenyi – whose impeachment was by ODM. Much as Jubilee proposed Waiguru removal, the signatures that supported the plan were from both parties,” he said.

Mbadi cut in and challenged the Garissa Township lawmaker to stop rewriting history by purporting that ODM initiated Waiguru’s impeachment.

“Jubilee started the impeachment of Waiguru and ran to hide in Naivasha with mistresses. When we have an impeachment motion against any state officer, it will be serious,” the Suba South MP said.

Ichung’wa took on Orengo following the plan before he was ruled out of order for breach of Standing Orders.

The rules bar members from discussing members of either Houses – the Senate and National Assembly.

“Impeaching a deputy president elected by the people is not easy. We were consulting over the incident in Kwale,” the Kikuyu MP said.

The DP’s allies dared the impeachment proponents to bring the motion to the House if they had the numbers.
