Nandi Governor Stephen Sang might be impeached over financial impropriety in his government.
Already, the county assembly has sent his Finance executive Alfred Lagat packing.
The 31 ward reps, hitherto subservient to Sang, blame the county's financial woes on poor leadership.
“Nandi will never catch up with the rest of the counties if we spare the rod. The impeachment of Governor Stephen Sang could end impunity and restore hope,” Cornelius Sum said.
One of the most quoted losses involves the purchase of water rigs that have never been used since their purchase in 2018 due to lack of key components.
The Sh650 million equipment has no compressors and lies in the water department.
Another unprioritised expenditure is the purchase of road construction equipment with Sh1.2 billion set aside for the settlement of pending bills in the 2017/2018 financial year.
The equipment – 24 tippers, three excavators, four backhoes, and 100 plant operators – is now idle due to lack of fuel, funds for maintenance and general daily upkeep.
All these concerns were brought to the attention of the county assembly during the debate on the impeachment of Lagat on Wednesday.
Lagat was blamed for delayed salaries and allowances for employees and the MCAs.
The assembly's chairman for Budget and Appropriations committee Walter Teno, while supporting the removal of Lagat, said statutory organisations were owed millions of shillings.
“NHIF, NSSF, county Pension Fund, PAYE, banks, HELB and staff welfare have not been receiving their monthly dues as the finance department has been sitting on them,” Teno said.
The county was on the spot in 2019 when construction materials for 60 ECD centres were stolen from its stores.
The stolen items tyres. There was also rampant siphoning off of fuel by employees.
The county assembly has questioned how fuel worth Sh1.2 billion was used this financial year yet many roads are unattended.
Governor Sang blames the national Treasury for untimely disbursement of funds.
He says he will not pay most of the pending bills because they were fake.
