The formerhead of the Presidential Press Service during President Moi's tenure Lee Njiru has described the death of Moi as a big loss to him.

Njiru said that Moi was his teacher, servant, my leader, and my mentor.

Lee was speaking to Citizen TV on Tuesday morning through the phone.

 
 
 

He added that the former president protected him as well as giving him life skills.

 

Njiru became Moi's press secretary on August 22, 1978 following the death of the first President of Kenya Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.

Lee has said the late Moi taught him how to stay and love other people.

He said Moi's health changed in the last three years from the person he knew before.

He added that Moi is not 96 years as per the identification card and that he might have died at the age of 102 or 103 years.

"Mzee Moi is not 96 years. Mzee Moi is about 102/103 years and he had told me that don't go by what is in his ID card," Lee said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday issued a presidential proclamation announcing the passing on of the retired President.

 

The former president died at the age of 95.

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday announced a period of national mourning on behalf of the passing of Moi.

In a presidential proclamation issued on Tuesday, said the period of national mourning will be observed from today until the day of Moi's funeral. 

The Head of State has ordered the flag of Kenya to be flown half-mast as an expression of sorrow.
