Police in Matungulu have launched investigations into an attack on a radio journalist in Tala town on Monday morning.
Boniface Wambua who works for the Kamba language radio station Mbaitu FM was attacked around 4:15 am on his way to church for an early service.
Wambua who lives in Tala town said he was with a friend heading to church when two unknown people ambushed them with a panga and a metal bar.
They left the journalist with serious cuts on the leg and left harm.
"I was with my friend who ran away unattacked when the two men ambushed us in Vangala area 200 metres from Tala bus station. One hit me on the back and the other attacked me on the head, leg and my hand," Wambua said.
He was treated at Matungulu health centre and proceeded to Tala police station to report the incident.
Wambua said the town had been experiencing insecurity lately and urged police to act immediately and arrest the perpetrators.
Matungulu deputy police commander William Ngombo said the suspects ran away with Wambua's phone and Sh4,000.
Ngombo said police received the information at around 7am when when the journalist reported.
"This morning on his way to church in the company of Joseph Muuo his friend, in Vangala area, they met two men who were armed with a panga and a metal bar who attacked him and he sustained deep cuts on his head, slight cuts on the left leg and his left harm," Ngombo said.
Mbaitu FM managing director Martin Maasai condemned the act and urged police in Matungulu to "do what they are trained to do and bring these people to justice."
"We woke up to bad news of the attack on our correspondent in Tala and I condemn those individuals who attacked him," Maasai said.
"I am not ruling out the fact that the gangsters might be operating with other people who do not like hearing the truth. It could be leaders or politicians or anybody but I urge the police to respond quickly and arrest them."
Kenya Correspondent Association chairman Janak Oloo urged the police to launch investigations on the motive with a view to holding the attackers accountable.
"The motive of the attack remains unclear. We stand in solidarity and urge all journalists at Mbaitu FM and in the region to remain courageous in doing their duties. The entire KCA family stands in solidarity," Janak said.
