The Employment and Labour Relations Court has quashed the appointment of Mary Wambui as the Chairperson of the National Employment Authority.

Issuing the ruling on Friday, Justice Onesmas Makau said her appointment was irregular and was against the law.

The judge added that she does not fit for the position nor does her qualifications match the occupancy of the office.

The immediate Labour CS Ukur Yatani, who is the current National Treasury CS, through a Gazette notice dated October 14, 2020, appointed Wambui as the chairperson of NEA for a period of three years.

Her appointment caused varying reactions as Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja threatened to challenge her appointment in court.

Sakaja had said that her appointment goes against Section 10(2) of the National Employment Authority Act as well as the vision of the institution.

It states that a person shall be qualified to serve as the chairperson of the board if they have at least seven years experience in human resource management or its equivalent.
