A memorial
requiem mass
for fallen Recce officer Japheth Nuru
who died during the DusitD2 terror attack was held on Friday at the All Saints Cathedral.
Nuru died after succumbing to injuries during the attack on Tuesday last week.
The mass was attended by family members, friends, politicians and top police officers.
Nuru was
eulogised as a generous, caring and loving young man with a big heart.
Government spokesman Erick Kiraithe led government officials and police commandants to praise the fallen hero.
"Japheth died as a hero. He died so that Kenyans can be rescued from instant death," Kiraithe said.
He said the government will not be cowed by terror threats but will fight and defeat
them.
"The aim of a
terrorist is to kill as many people as possible. We thank the police for the quick response," he added.
Taveta MP Naomi Shabaan acknowledged Nuru as
a disciplined officer who volunteered in many cases to ensure that things are better.
Nuru will be laid to rest on Saturday at his home in Taita Taveta county.
21 lives were lost and more than 700 people rescued from the scene.
Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet
on Tuesday refuted claims that the family of Nuru has been neglected.
Boinett said the police will carter for all the officer's funeral expenses.
"We are catering for all the funeral expenses of this gallant officer who died in the line of duty as per our Service Standing Orders," the IG said.
"I have given orders for the body to be flown to their rural home in a police chopper on Friday ahead of the burial on Saturday."
Boinnet said the National Youth Service personnel are building a house for the family.
