The Lake Region Economic Bloc has appealed to the Senate to support its development bank project.

Bloc CEO Abala Wanga said some senators oppose creation of the LREB Bank because of ulterior motives but did not elaborate.

Abala urged the 10 county assemblies that have not passed the LREB Bill to swiftly do so. They are Bomet, Bungoma, Busia, Homa Bay, Kericho, Nandi, Nyamira, Siaya, Trans Nzoia and Vihiga. Only Kakamega, Kisumu, Migori and Homa Bay counties have passed the Bill.

“Passage will legalise the entity and make it possible for the 14 member states of the bloc to achieve their agenda,” he said during the LREB Dinner at Kisii Sports Club on Thursday.

Kisii Senator Sammy Ongeri said he will be push for establishment of the LREB Bank to match the AfDB.

“The bank aims to research, collate and synthesise critical information for critical development. I won't see anybody standing against anything that would help add value to what you already have. Rest assured, in the Senate it will have my support," Ongeri said.

He urged bloc members not to duplicate projects.

Vihiga Governor Wilber Ottichilo said LREB was there to stay, with the member states having set up the policy and legal frameworks.

Kisii Governor James Ongwae said his county was the second

to pass the LREB Bill and urged others do swiftly do the same.
