Foreign Affairs PS Macharia Kamau has assured Kenyans living in DR Congo and Gabon of their safety.

In a statement on Tuesday, he said no Kenyan living or working in both countries has been affected by the aftermath of the polls in the DRC and the failed coup in Gabon.

"The ministry is pleased to acknowledge that peace and a return of the rule of law has been assured in Gabon," he said.

"In the case of DR Congo, we welcome

the election while taking note of the challenges the country has faced. We commend the government of the DRC and the people of DRC for gallantly embracing a democratic electoral exercise."

Tension is rising in the DRC because of the delay of results after the elections were held on December 30.

The DRC has for many years had conflict over controversial elections. It has had a peacekeeping force in the country for nearly 20 years.

In Gabon, two soldiers who took part in Monday's failed attempted coup were killed by security officers who stormed the national radio building which they had taken over.

Three others are under arrest.

The junior officers had claimed they seized power "to restore democracy" in Gabon where the President's family, Ali Bongo, has ruled for 50 years.

Bongo is currently in Morocco seeking treatment after he suffered a stroke in October.
